Berkeley, California-When most people think of California Racing, the “A” circuit comes to mind which has always been Santa Anita, Del Mar, and the defunct Hollywood Park. The upper California “B” circuit of Golden Gate Fields and the defunct Bay Meadows is what one could argue is the minor leagues, rarely does the lone remaining major Northern Cali racetrack garnish the main stage, but that did happen this past Sunday June 12 as they had a Belmont hangover closing day card which featured a 1.45 million pick 6 carryover that was getting forced out. The field consists of 11 entrants who are vying for the 2^nd Jewel of the Triple Crown with Nyquist trying to give an encore performance from American Pharoah’s Triple Crown achievement last year. The weather forecast is projecting unseasonably cool temperatures with a dry partly sunny Friday, but Saturday is calling for a 70% chance of steady rain which will affect the track condition, likely sloppy. Lexington, Kentucky- The Breeders Cup returns to Kentucky for the 9^th time, but this year the Cup won’t be in Louisville, they decided to have it to where most horses are bred and sold every year, that is Lexington, KY more specifically Keeneland Racecourse. This year marks the 32^nd running of the Breeders Cup, but they haven’t run it at a smaller venue since 2007 when they raced at Monmouth Park. Continue reading →

The Derby has been phrased as “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” and rightfully so as celebs, sports fans, and even the average Joe join racing fans everywhere to put horse racing at the forefront of sports. I am not a marketing expert, but my guesstimate is 80% of wagering participation is done by amateurs. The technical definition of an amateur is:  One who engages in an art, science, or study, or athletic activity as a pastime instead of a profession.

The east coasters though will finally get their way next year as it moves to Lexington, Kentucky. The main factor of why I like it in California is pretty simple, da weather. Every year the forecast appears to be the same: 80’s, sunny, and no precipitation.
