Breeder’s Cup thoughts
Arcadia, California- For the 6th time the Breeders Cup will be contested at Santa Anita. As a purist who has attended over half of these events including last 3 editions in the greater Los Angeles area, this is the best place for it. I love Churchill Downs, but the weather is always on the cool side for the fans. Let’s be real, the weather in the Midwest & Northeast in November is not ideal (case in point, look what “Frankenstorm” just did, it even knocked the DRF off-line), but in Southern California this time of year it is picture perfect.

Standardbred 3 year old colts & geldings crop
I got into racing in 1985, that year there was a beast named Nihilator who pretty much dominated the harness racing world. A two year old surfaced named Barberry Spur who had local connections to my native Western, PA area. The following year came a horse called Jaguar Spur who carreid the Stillings torch which enabled them to win the Little Brown Jug in back to back years of 86′ & 87′.
Neither animal won a race in sub 1:50 although Jaguar Spur did time trail at the Red Mile and broke the 1:50 barrier. Continue reading
